HPV Cervical Cancer Screening Home Test

This kit uses the same self-sampling approach that NHS England began offering in 2026 to women who have not attended cervical screening: you take a swab from the vagina yourself, which detects the high-risk HPV types that cause cervical cancer. Studies of self-sampling show it finds high-risk HPV about as reliably as a sample taken by a nurse, and most women find it far easier than a speculum examination.

Self-taken HPV swabs detect high-risk HPV with sensitivity close to a clinician-taken sample when analysed by PCR in an accredited laboratory, which is how this test is processed. What a home test cannot do is look at the cervical cells themselves; that cytology step happens in the clinic if HPV is found. So a negative HPV result is strong reassurance, and a positive result is a clear signal to have a clinic examination, not a diagnosis.

The only routine test for HPV is a swab of the cervix or vagina analysed for the virus's DNA. In the NHS cervical screening programme a nurse takes the sample with a speculum; with this kit you take it yourself at home. There is no blood test for HPV, because the virus lives in skin and mucosal cells rather than in the bloodstream.
