Risks

Although prostate cancer can affect many people, studies show that some are at higher risk:

Age: as with most cancers, prostate cancer is more common as people get older, generally for those aged 50 or over.

Ethnicity: prostate cancer is more common in black men than in white men. It is least common in Asian men.

Family history: the risk is higher if you have a close family member who has prostate cancer. This could be a father, brother, grandfather or uncle.

Prostate cancer can be hereditary

Genetic factors are thought to contribute to around 10% of prostate cancer cases. In fact, if your father or brother has a history of prostate cancer, your risk of developing the disease is 2.5 times higher compared to a man without any family history of the condition.

It’s important to understand your hereditary health with our Genetic DNA test. If you have a genetic predisposition to cancer, your children have a 50% chance of it too.

Prostate cancer signs and symptoms

Most early cases of prostate cancer do not cause symptoms because of the way the cancer grows. Since most prostate cancers start in the outer part of the prostate gland, the cancer is not big enough to press on the tube (urethra) that carries urine from the bladder to the penis, changing the way you urinate.


If prostate cancer spreads, it can cause other symptoms such as:

  • Back, hip, pelvis or bone pain, that doesn’t go away even with rest.
  • Problems with keeping an erection
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Consistent tiredness
  • Unexplained weight loss

These symptoms can be caused by other health problems, but it’s important to test for prostate cancer to ensure you understand your health.
