Understanding the Hepatitis Screening Blood Test.

What is the Hepatitis Screening Blood Test?

The Hepatitis Screening Blood Test is a crucial examination designed to detect the presence of hepatitis viruses in the bloodstream. There are different types of hepatitis, including A, B, and C, and each requires a specific testing method. By identifying these viruses, healthcare providers can prescribe appropriate treatments and preventative measures. This test is vital for anyone at risk, as early detection can lead to better management and health outcomes. Regular screening can save lives, making it essential for individuals in high-risk categories or those with symptoms.

Who Should Get Tested?

Anyone can benefit from the Hepatitis Screening Blood Test, but certain populations are at a higher risk. If you have multiple sexual partners, use intravenous drugs, or were born to a mother with hepatitis, it’s especially important to get tested. Additionally, healthcare guidelines recommend that anyone born between 1945 and 1965 should undergo a one-time screening for hepatitis C, as this group is disproportionately affected. By knowing your status, you can take necessary steps to ensure your overall health and wellbeing.

What to Expect During the Test?

Getting a Hepatitis Screening Blood Test is straightforward and minimally invasive. Our healthcare professional will draw a small sample of blood, usually from your arm, and send it to a laboratory for analysis. The process takes only a few minutes, and the results are typically available within a week. You might feel a slight pinch during the blood draw, but it’s quick and manageable. After receiving your results, our doctor will provide you with recommend further steps if needed. Understanding your hepatitis status is important, and testing is the first step.

More Information

If you are concerned that you have been exposed to HIV, Hep B, Hep C through unprotected sex, sharing needles or other behaviours, this test is for you.
This test can also be used by people at increased risk of being infected by a blood-borne virus through work.

Testing for Hepatitis B and C is recommended 3 months after exposure. These viruses may not be immediately detectable in your blood, so testing too early could yield false-negative results. If you test before 3 months and get a negative result, it’s advised to retest later for confirmation.

Results in 5-7 working days of sample being received at the laboratory.
