What does the Platinum full body MRI include that Gold does not?
A cardiac MRI. The Platinum scan images the heart's chambers and muscle, the valves and the major vessels leaving the heart, looking for enlargement, thickening, scarring, fluid and structural abnormalities. Everything else is the same as the Gold scan: brain, neck vessels, chest, abdomen, pelvis and spine. It is the scan to choose if heart health is part of the reason you want a full body check, particularly with a family history of heart disease or cardiomyopathy.
How long is a full body MRI scan?
The Platinum scan takes 60 to 90 minutes in the scanner, because the heart is imaged in sequences timed to your heartbeat, which takes longer than other regions. The Gold scan without the heart takes around 60 minutes. Allow extra time on the day for arrival and the safety checklist. You lie still while the table moves you through the scanner region by region.
How much is a full body MRI scan in the UK?

Can you pay for a full body MRI scan privately?

What does a cardiac MRI show?
Cardiac MRI is the most detailed non-invasive way to look at the structure of the heart. It measures the size and thickness of the chambers and walls, how well the heart pumps, and shows scarring from previous damage, inflammation, fluid around the heart, and problems with the valves and the aorta. It does not directly show blockages inside the coronary arteries, which is a job for a CT coronary angiogram, and it is not a replacement for blood pressure and cholesterol checks.
What can a full body MRI detect?
Structural changes in the organs it images: tumours and abnormal growths, cysts, lesions, aneurysms in the brain and neck vessels, enlarged organs, gallstones and kidney stones, fatty liver, disc and spinal problems, and, in the Platinum scan, heart muscle and valve abnormalities. MRI is best at soft tissue and does not image the lungs or bones in the detail that CT does. Small or very early changes can be missed, so a clear scan is reassuring rather than a guarantee.
Is a full body MRI worth it?
For people with a family history of cancer, aneurysm or heart disease, or who want a structural baseline without symptoms, it provides information that blood tests cannot. The cost, and the possibility of a harmless finding needing follow-up, are the trade-offs. If anything is found, a Goodbody clinician calls you to interpret it, so a worrying report never arrives without an explanation. If you have a specific symptom, a targeted scan of that area is usually the better first step.
Do I need a GP referral for a private MRI?

How do I prepare for the scan?
Wear clothes without metal, leave jewellery at home, and tell the centre about any implants, pacemakers, metal fragments when you book, as some are not compatible with MRI. Eat and drink normally unless the centre advises otherwise. There is no radiation and no injection, so you can drive afterwards.
