How much does a full body MRI scan cost in the UK?

What can a full body MRI scan detect?
A full body MRI looks for structural changes in the organs it images: tumours and abnormal growths, cysts, lesions, aneurysms in the brain and neck vessels, enlarged organs, gallstones and kidney stones, fatty liver, spinal disc problems and signs of inflammation. It is good at soft tissue, which is why it is used to look at the brain, liver, kidneys, pancreas and pelvis. It does not replace blood tests, bowel screening or mammography, and it cannot see everything; small or very early changes can be missed.
Is a full body MRI scan worth it?
It depends on what you want from it. For someone with a family history of cancer, an aneurysm or organ disease, or who wants a structural baseline of their body without symptoms, a full body MRI gives information no blood test can. The trade-offs are cost, and the chance of finding something harmless that then needs follow-up to rule out. If anything is found, a Goodbody clinician calls you to put it in context, so you are not left with a report and no explanation. If you have a specific symptom, a targeted scan of that area is usually the better first step.
How long does a full body MRI take?
About 60 minutes in the scanner for the Gold scan, and around 90 minutes for the Platinum scan with the heart included. Allow extra time for arrival and a safety check of any metal or implants. You lie still on a table that moves through the scanner while it takes images of each region in turn; the scanner is noisy but painless, and you can usually listen to music.
Does your whole body go into the scanner for a full body MRI?
Yes. Unlike a knee or shoulder scan, where only that part is inside the machine, a full body MRI images you from head to pelvis, so you pass through the scanner in stages. The Goodbody scan is done on standard MRI machines at established imaging centres. Do I need a referral for a private full body MRI?
No. You book directly with Goodbody and we arrange the clinical referral that imaging centres require, so there is nothing to ask your GP for. Appointments are usually available within a week, compared with NHS waits of weeks or months for a scan that the NHS would only offer with a specific clinical reason.
Can I request a full body scan on the NHS?
Not as a screening scan. The NHS uses MRI to investigate symptoms or monitor a known condition, and a GP cannot order a whole-body scan for reassurance or early detection. If you have symptoms, see your GP first; if you want a baseline scan without symptoms, a private scan is the only route. If a private scan finds something, the report can be taken to your GP, who can arrange NHS follow-up.

What is the difference between the Gold and Platinum full body MRI?
Platinum adds a cardiac MRI to everything in the Gold scan, imaging the heart's chambers, muscle and major vessels, and takes about 30 minutes longer. Choose Gold for a comprehensive structural check of the brain, chest, abdomen, pelvis and spine, and Platinum if heart health is part of what you want to know, particularly with a family history of heart disease. Prostate screening can be added to either.
How do I prepare for a full body MRI?
Very little preparation is needed. Wear comfortable clothes without metal, leave jewellery and watches at home, and tell the centre about any implants, pacemakers, metal fragments when you book, since some are not compatible with MRI. You can eat and drink normally unless the centre tells you otherwise. The scan uses no radiation and no contrast injection, so you can drive and return to normal activities straight afterwards.
