Your questions answered

What is the blood test for heavy metals called?

A heavy metal screen or trace metal panel. It measures the concentration of specific metals in whole blood or serum, using a technique called mass spectrometry that can detect them at parts-per-billion levels. Blood is the right sample for recent or ongoing exposure to lead, and for the essential metals; urine and hair tests are used for some other metals and for long-term exposure. This test measures lead plus iron, copper, chromium, magnesium and calcium from one venous sample.

Is there metal in your blood, and which metals does this test check?

Yes, always. Iron, copper, magnesium, calcium, zinc and chromium are essential: your body needs them for oxygen transport, enzymes, nerves, bones and blood sugar control, and both too little and too much cause problems. Lead has no function in the body and is toxic at any level, so the aim is for it to be as low as possible. This test measures lead and five essential metals. It does not measure mercury, arsenic, cadmium or aluminium, so if your concern is one of those you will need a different test.

What are the signs of heavy metal poisoning?

Lead: tiredness, irritability, headaches, abdominal pain, constipation, anaemia, high blood pressure, memory and concentration problems, and in children developmental delay; most people with raised lead have no symptoms until levels are high. Copper excess: nausea, abdominal pain and, with long-term overload, liver damage. Chromium excess from industrial exposure: skin and respiratory irritation. Deficiency of the essential metals causes its own symptoms, tiredness and breathlessness for iron, cramps and palpitations for magnesium. Because the symptoms are vague and overlap with many conditions, a blood test is the only way to know.

Who should have a heavy metal blood test?

People with occupational exposure: construction, demolition and renovation of pre-1970s buildings, plumbing, battery, scrap metal, foundry, shooting range and some manufacturing work. People living in older housing with original paintwork or lead pipes, or using imported cosmetics, spices, traditional remedies or glazed pottery, which are recurring sources of lead in the UK. People with unexplained anaemia, abdominal pain, neuropathy or high blood pressure that has not been explained. And people who want their essential mineral status checked, for example on restrictive diets or with malabsorption.

How can I get a heavy metal test through the NHS?

Your GP can order a blood lead level if you have a plausible exposure and symptoms, and occupational health services test workers in regulated industries under the Control of Lead at Work Regulations. The NHS does not offer heavy metal screening for reassurance or for vague symptoms without an identified exposure, and testing for the essential metals is done only when a specific deficiency is suspected. A private test gives you the panel without a referral, and a raised lead result should be taken to your GP, who is required to report it.

What happens if my lead level is high?

The GP report explains the level against UK reference values and what to do. Blood lead below 5 micrograms per decilitre is typical for UK adults with no particular exposure; above 10 warrants finding and removing the source; above 20 to 25 needs GP assessment and, in workers, removal from exposure; higher levels may need specialist treatment. The most important step at any raised level is identifying the source, because lead is cleared slowly once exposure stops. Public Health England's Lead Exposure Surveillance System monitors raised results in England.

Do heavy metal detoxes work?

Not the ones sold as supplements, foot pads, clays or juices; none has been shown to remove metals from the body, and some contain metals themselves. The only treatment that removes heavy metals is medical chelation, prescribed by a specialist for confirmed high levels, and it carries risks that make it inappropriate for anyone with normal or mildly raised results. For most people the right response to a raised level is to find and stop the exposure and let the body clear it, with retesting to confirm. For the essential metals, correcting a deficiency is straightforward through diet or supplements.

Why measure iron, copper, magnesium, calcium and chromium?

Because they are the metals whose levels most often matter to health, and because the balance between them is informative. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world. Copper deficiency causes anaemia and nerve problems and can follow zinc supplementation or bariatric surgery; copper excess points to Wilson's disease. Magnesium is low in many people on diuretics or acid-suppressing tablets and causes cramps, palpitations and fatigue. Calcium reflects bone and parathyroid health. Chromium is involved in blood sugar control and is raised by some occupational exposures and metal implants.

Do I need to prepare for the test?

No fasting. Stop mineral supplements, including multivitamins containing iron, magnesium or chromium, for 24 hours beforehand so the result reflects your body's levels rather than the morning's tablet. The sample is drawn into special metal-free tubes at a clinic or by a nurse, which is why there is no finger-prick option.

How much does a heavy metal blood test cost?

£449 at a Goodbody clinic or £469 with a nurse home visit, including the blood draw, laboratory analysis of six metals and a GP report. Heavy metal panels in the UK typically cost £150 to £500 depending on the number of metals and the method; single blood lead tests are around £60 to £100.

How long do the results take?

Results are emailed within 7 to 10 working days of your sample reaching the laboratory, because metal analysis is performed by a specialist laboratory in batches. The GP report explains each metal against its reference range and what to do about any that are outside it.

Where can I get a heavy metal test near me?

At any of 250+ Goodbody clinics across the UK, or with a nurse visiting your home. No GP referral is needed. Find your nearest clinic.

What happens next

Your results and GP report are emailed within 7 to 10 working days of your sample reaching the laboratory. The report gives each metal against its reference range, explains what a raised or low result means, and sets out what to do next, including identifying a likely source of lead exposure and when to see your GP. All samples are analysed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory.

More Information

Our Trace Metal blood test checks for metal toxicity in your blood to identify whether you have been exposed to heavy metals that can be potentially harmful to your health.

Heavy metals can enter your system in various ways. You might breathe them in, eat or drink them, or absorb them through your skin. Too much toxic metal in your body can cause poisoning and lead to serious health problems including organ damage, behavioural changes and memory problems.

They are typically found naturally in the environment, such as in certain foods, medicines and even in water. However, you can also be exposed through your job or environment.

Your symptoms will vary depending on the type and amount of heavy metal in your system.

Our Trace Metal blood test will check your blood for:

  • Calcium
  • Chromium
  • Copper
  • Iron
  • Lead
  • Magnesium

Results back within 24 hours

I wanted to have a blood test after a previous HbA1c result showed I was in the diabetic range. I had made some lifestyle changes about a month earlier and wanted to check my progress, but my doctor wasn’t able to retest for another two months, so I decided to arrange my own test. Goodbody made the whole process very easy and convenient, with straightforward booking and quick service. I received my results within few days, and my levels had improved, which was really encouraging and motivated me to keep going. It was well worth the cost.

Sent off for 24hour heart monitor

I ordered a 24-hour heart monitor kit on Friday and had the results by the following Tuesday. The level of service was excellent, especially given the current one-year wait for an NHS Holter monitor in our area!

Got the PSA results next day

I completed the PSA test with the PSE EpiSwitch Prostate Cancer test in Soho yesterday and posted my samples at Soho Square at 10:30 am. I received my PSA results the very next day—outstanding service! Despite a BRCA genetic mutation, I am happy to report that I am cancer-free. Thank you, EpiSwitch. 5 stars!

Someone from Goodbody called me to put my mind ease

I recently had a full blood count taken by a very friendly nurse at Superdrug. She completed all my paperwork for me and was incredibly kind. I received my results the next day. Because of my anxiety and having never seen a lab report before, I emailed for some clarification, and to my surprise, someone from Goodbody called me to put my mind at ease. I’m very grateful for the excellent service and will definitely be using them again.

Understanding of my fear of needles

The nurse was incredibly helpful and understanding of my fear of needles, providing constant reassurance and guiding me through the entire process to help take my mind off what was happening.

Top notch experience

As someone who regularly needs blood tests due to diabetes, I can honestly say this was the first time I experienced absolutely no pain at all with the needle—truly none! There was also no bruising afterward. It was a really top-notch job and made for an excellent overall experience (something I’ve never said about a blood test before!).

Ashley. P

Friendly and relaxing atmosphere

I found the staff to be friendly, approachable, and highly professional. They explained everything clearly as they carried out the blood draw. The clinic was clean and thoughtfully set up to help patients feel at ease.

Polite and efficient approach

I was impressed by the company’s focus on clear communication and professionalism. The procedure was quick, well-organised, and ran smoothly with no unnecessary waiting or confusion. I especially appreciated their gentle approach and how they put me at ease, which was reassuring since it was my first blood draw at the clinic.

Amazing service including nurse coming

Outstanding service, including a nurse visiting my home for blood work. Full body scans through Well Man and Well Woman were arranged within three days, including additional scans and tests which i had requested. All organised within two days and delivered directly to my home. Truly convenient and efficient service!

Made a dreaded blood test so much easier

I had been feeling unwell for three years and had numerous blood tests through my doctor with no clear answers. I decided to try Goodbody Clinic and ordered an at-home menopause test. The results revealed that I have a low thyroid TSH level, and I am so relieved that this issue was finally identified.

Truly fantastic local service!

From start to finish, the service was exceptional. Booking the appointment was straightforward, and the entire experience was well-organized and impressively quick.
