Your questions answered

Why am I always tired?

Persistent tiredness usually has an ordinary explanation: too little or poor-quality sleep, stress, low mood, too much alcohol or caffeine, not enough activity, or a demanding stretch of life. When those do not explain it, the commonest medical causes a blood test can find are iron deficiency and anaemia, low vitamin D, an underactive thyroid, diabetes and low vitamin B12. This test covers the first three groups directly and picks up signs of infection or inflammation through the full blood count.

What blood test should I have for tiredness?

The standard first set for fatigue is a full blood count, ferritin and vitamin D, which is what this test provides, often with thyroid function and HbA1c added. If your results here are normal and tiredness continues, the GP report will say which of those additional markers to check next. For women with heavy periods, the iron and ferritin results are usually the most telling; for anyone indoors most of the day or with darker skin, vitamin D often explains a great deal.

Why am I so tired but my blood test is normal?

A normal result on this test rules out the common blood causes of fatigue, which is useful in itself. The remaining causes are mostly not visible in blood: sleep apnoea, insomnia, depression and anxiety, chronic pain, long Covid, medication side effects, and lifestyle load. Thyroid problems and diabetes are also not measured by this particular test, so your GP report will suggest checking those if symptoms persist. Take normal results to your GP as a starting point rather than an end point.

Why am I always cold and tired?

Feeling cold and tired together points most often to iron-deficiency anaemia or an underactive thyroid. Low iron reduces the oxygen your blood carries, which leaves you tired, breathless and sensitive to cold; low thyroid hormone slows your metabolism with the same effect plus weight gain and dry skin. This test checks the iron and anaemia side thoroughly. If those are normal, a thyroid test is the next step.

What are the red flags for fatigue?

See a GP promptly, rather than waiting for a test result, if tiredness comes with unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fever, persistent pain, breathlessness at rest, chest pain, black or bloody stools, a lump, or if it has come on suddenly and severely. These are not signs of ordinary fatigue and need assessment. For tiredness that has built up over weeks or months without those features, a blood test is a sensible first step.

Can the NHS test for tiredness and fatigue?

Yes. If tiredness has lasted several weeks, your GP can order a full blood count, ferritin, thyroid function, HbA1c and often vitamin D and B12 on the NHS. People use a private test to skip the wait, to check before a GP appointment so the consultation starts with results, or because they want vitamin D included, which is not always tested routinely.

Can a blood test make you tired?

Having blood taken can leave some people briefly light-headed or weary, usually from anxiety about needles, not eating beforehand or a small drop in blood pressure. It passes within minutes to hours. The amount of blood taken for this test is small and does not cause lasting tiredness. Eating normally before your appointment and drinking water helps.

What does this test check, in plain terms?

Three things. Whether your iron stores are low (ferritin and serum iron), which is the most common treatable cause of fatigue, especially in women. Whether you have enough vitamin D, which most people in the UK lack in winter. And whether your blood cells are normal: the full blood count shows anaemia (low haemoglobin), signs of infection or inflammation (white cells), clotting cells (platelets) and the size and shape of red cells, which hints at the cause of any anaemia.

How much does a tiredness blood test cost?

A private tiredness and fatigue blood test costs £139 at a Goodbody clinic or £159 with a nurse home visit. Both include laboratory analysis of all 18 markers and a GP report. This test needs a venous sample, so there is no finger-prick home kit.

Where can I get a blood test for tiredness near me?

At any of Goodbody's 250+ partner clinics across the UK, usually within a few days, or with a nurse who comes to your home. No GP referral is needed. Find your nearest clinic.

What happens next

Your results and GP report are emailed to you within 3 to 5 working days of your sample reaching the laboratory. The report explains each marker in plain language, flags anything outside the reference range and says what to do next, including when to take the result to your own GP. All samples are analysed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory.

Got the PSA results next day

I completed the PSA test with the PSE EpiSwitch Prostate Cancer test in Soho yesterday and posted my samples at Soho Square at 10:30 am. Someone from Goodbody called me to put my mind ease

I recently had a full blood count taken by a very friendly nurse at Superdrug. She completed all my paperwork for me and was incredibly kind. I received my results the next day. Because of my anxiety and having never seen a lab report before, I emailed for some clarification, and to my surprise, someone from Goodbody called me to put my mind at ease. I’m very grateful for the excellent service and will definitely be using them again.

Top notch experience

As someone who regularly needs blood tests due to diabetes, I can honestly say this was the first time I experienced absolutely no pain at all with the needle—truly none! There was also no bruising afterward. It was a really top-notch job and made for an excellent overall experience (something I’ve never said about a blood test before!).

Made a dreaded blood test so much easier

I had been feeling unwell for three years and had numerous blood tests through my doctor with no clear answers. I decided to try Goodbody Clinic and ordered an at-home menopause test. The results revealed that I have a low thyroid TSH level, and I am so relieved that this issue was finally identified.
