How do I check my testosterone levels?
With a blood test taken in the morning. Testosterone is highest between 7am and 11am and falls through the day, so a morning sample is the only reliable way to check it; an afternoon result can read 20 to 30 percent lower and cause a false alarm. Order the home finger-prick kit and take the sample first thing, or book a morning appointment at a clinic or with a nurse. There is no accurate saliva or home meter alternative.
What is a testosterone blood test?
It measures the total amount of testosterone in your blood, in nanomoles per litre (nmol/L). Total testosterone is the standard first test and the one NICE and the British Society for Sexual Medicine base decisions on. If it comes back low or borderline, the next step is a repeat morning sample together with SHBG, LH, FSH and prolactin to calculate free testosterone and find the cause; those are in our Enhanced Testosterone Blood Test.
What are normal testosterone levels?
Laboratories quote a reference range for adult men of roughly 8 to 29 nmol/L, and your report shows the exact range used. As a guide, the British Society for Sexual Medicine treats a morning total testosterone above 12 nmol/L as normal, 8 to 12 as borderline and worth repeating with free testosterone, and below 8 as low and usually needing treatment if symptoms are present. Levels fall slowly with age, by about 1 percent a year after 40. [confirm]
What is a dangerously low testosterone level?
There is no figure at which testosterone becomes dangerous in the way blood sugar can, but a morning total testosterone below 8 nmol/L is clearly low, and below about 5 nmol/L points to a definite underlying cause, such as a pituitary or testicular problem, that needs specialist assessment. Very low levels over years weaken bones and muscle and affect mood and heart health, which is why a confirmed low result should be investigated rather than ignored.
How do I know if I have low testosterone?
Symptoms are the clue, but they are not specific: low sex drive, difficulty with erections, tiredness, low mood or irritability, poor concentration, loss of muscle and strength, more body fat, and reduced body hair. Many of these also come from stress, poor sleep, alcohol or depression, which is why a blood test is needed to tell them apart. If you have several of these symptoms and a morning testosterone below the range on two occasions, low testosterone is confirmed.
What causes low testosterone?
In young men, the usual causes are obesity, type 2 diabetes, heavy alcohol use, anabolic steroid use, opioid painkillers, chronic illness and, less commonly, testicular damage, undescended testicles or a pituitary problem. In older men, levels fall gradually with age and the decline is steeper with excess weight and poor health. Finding the cause matters because weight loss and better sleep raise testosterone measurably, while steroid or opioid use suppresses it.
Does low testosterone cause hair loss or tiredness?
Tiredness, yes: fatigue and low motivation are among the most common symptoms, alongside low libido and low mood. Hair loss, generally no: male-pattern baldness is driven by sensitivity to a testosterone by-product (DHT), not by low testosterone, and men with low testosterone tend to lose body hair rather than head hair. Can I ask my GP for a testosterone test?
Yes, if you have symptoms such as low libido, erectile problems or tiredness. Some GPs are cautious about testing men without clear symptoms because a single low result is often normal on repeat and because treatment carries risks, which is the honest answer to why doctors can seem reluctant. A private morning result gives you and your GP something concrete to discuss, and a low result can be repeated on the NHS.

Can women use this test?
Women produce testosterone too, at around a tenth of male levels, and it is measured when investigating PCOS, excess hair growth or acne. For that purpose the PCOS Blood Test, which includes testosterone with SHBG and the other relevant hormones, gives a more useful picture than testosterone alone.
