Your questions answered

How do you test for PCOS?

PCOS is diagnosed when two of three features are present: irregular or absent periods, signs of raised male hormones (androgens) either in blood tests or as excess hair growth and acne, and polycystic ovaries on an ultrasound scan. A blood test covers the hormone part and rules out conditions that mimic PCOS, such as thyroid problems. This test measures the hormones NICE recommends checking, so the results can be taken to your GP as the blood half of the diagnosis.

Can a blood test detect PCOS?

A blood test can show the hormone pattern of PCOS but cannot diagnose it alone. Raised testosterone or a raised free androgen index (calculated from testosterone and SHBG), often with a high LH to FSH ratio, supports the diagnosis when combined with irregular periods or an ultrasound. Some women with PCOS have normal hormone results, and some with raised androgens do not have PCOS. Your GP report sets the results against the diagnostic criteria and says whether referral is warranted.

What do blood tests show for PCOS?
Marker What it shows in PCOS
Testosterone Often raised; the main androgen behind excess hair and acne
SHBG Often low, which increases the amount of free, active testosterone
LH and FSH LH is often higher than FSH; a ratio above 2 to 1 is common but not required
TSH and free T4 Checked to rule out thyroid disease, which causes similar symptoms
Cholesterol profile PCOS raises the long-term risk of heart disease and diabetes, so lipids are checked at diagnosis
Which hormone is too high in PCOS?

Testosterone, or more precisely the free androgen index, which is the proportion of testosterone not bound to SHBG and therefore active. Many women with PCOS also have a raised LH relative to FSH. Insulin is frequently high as well, because insulin resistance drives much of the syndrome; it is not part of this test but your GP may check HbA1c or glucose if PCOS is confirmed.

When in my cycle should I take a PCOS blood test?

If your periods are reasonably regular, take the sample between day 2 and day 5 of your cycle, counting the first day of bleeding as day 1. That is when LH and FSH are most informative. If your periods are irregular or absent, which is common in PCOS, take the test on any day.

What are the symptoms of PCOS?

Irregular, infrequent or absent periods; difficulty getting pregnant; excess hair on the face, chest or back; thinning hair on the scalp; oily skin and acne; and weight gain, especially around the middle. Many women also notice low mood or tiredness. Symptoms vary a great deal, and it is common to have PCOS with only one or two of them.

Can I test for PCOS at home?

Yes. The home kit takes a small finger-prick sample that you post back to the laboratory in the packaging provided. It measures the same 12 markers as the clinic test and comes with the same GP report. Fast beforehand if you can, and take the sample in the morning. If you would rather not take your own sample, choose a clinic or nurse visit at checkout.

How long do PCOS blood test results take?

Results are emailed within 3 to 5 working days of your sample reaching the laboratory, with a GP report explaining each marker and whether the pattern points towards PCOS. Taking the sample takes about five minutes.

How much does a PCOS blood test cost?

A private PCOS blood test costs from £89 at Goodbody Clinic. The home finger-prick kit is £89, a blood draw at one of our clinics is £129 and a nurse home visit is £149. Every option includes laboratory analysis of all 12 markers and a GP report.

Where can I get a PCOS test near me?

Order the home kit, book a blood draw at one of Goodbody's 250+ partner clinics across the UK, or arrange a nurse home visit. No GP referral is needed. Find your nearest clinic.

What happens if my results suggest PCOS?

Take your GP report to your GP. They can arrange an ultrasound scan to complete the diagnosis, check HbA1c or glucose for insulin resistance, and discuss treatment for whichever symptoms matter most to you: regulating periods, managing hair and skin, supporting fertility or reducing long-term risk of diabetes and heart disease. Because those risks are raised in PCOS, the cholesterol results in this test are worth keeping as a baseline.

What happens next

Your results and GP report are emailed to you within 3 to 5 working days of your sample reaching the laboratory. The report explains each marker in plain language, flags anything outside the reference range and says what to do next, including when to take the result to your own GP. All samples are analysed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory.

More Information

Our Polycystic Ovary Syndrome blood test checks your hormone levels to identify whether you are suffering from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, sometimes know as PCOS. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a condition that affects the ovaries and leads to cysts developing on them which can affect your fertility levels, periods, weight gain and skin condition.

Symptoms typically include irregular or absent periods, facial hair growth, unexplained weight gain, poor skin condition and acne, and difficulty getting pregnant.
PCOS is a common condition in females in the UK affecting roughly 7% of women.

Our advanced PCOS blood test will check your levels of hormones including Testosterone, Luteinising Hormone and Follicular Stimulating Hormone to check for hormonal imbalances than can indicate Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

It will also check your cholesterol levels and your thyroid hormones for a well-rounded check on your health, as PCOS can affect your risk of high cholesterol and thyroid dysfunction.

Important Information

You are required to fast 8-12 hours before your test. Please arrange to take your sample in the morning, between days 2 and 5 of your period. It can be taken at any time if you are not having periods.

Do not take biotin supplements for 2 days prior to this test. If you are taking prescribed biotin you should discuss this with your doctor. HRT and the contraceptive pill can affect the results of this test, taking the test during a break from these will give more accurate results.

Results back within 24 hours

I wanted to have a blood test after a previous HbA1c result showed I was in the diabetic range. I had made some lifestyle changes about a month earlier and wanted to check my progress, but my doctor wasn’t able to retest for another two months, so I decided to arrange my own test. Goodbody made the whole process very easy and convenient, with straightforward booking and quick service. I received my results within few days, and my levels had improved, which was really encouraging and motivated me to keep going. It was well worth the cost.

James. S

Sent off for 24hour heart monitor

I ordered a 24-hour heart monitor kit on Friday and had the results by the following Tuesday. The level of service was excellent, especially given the current one-year wait for an NHS Holter monitor in our area!

Got the PSA results next day

I completed the PSA test with the PSE EpiSwitch Prostate Cancer test in Soho yesterday and posted my samples at Soho Square at 10:30 am. I received my PSA results the very next day—outstanding service! Despite a BRCA genetic mutation, I am happy to report that I am cancer-free. Thank you, EpiSwitch. 5 stars!

Someone from Goodbody called me to put my mind ease

I recently had a full blood count taken by a very friendly nurse at Superdrug. She completed all my paperwork for me and was incredibly kind. I received my results the next day. Because of my anxiety and having never seen a lab report before, I emailed for some clarification, and to my surprise, someone from Goodbody called me to put my mind at ease. I’m very grateful for the excellent service and will definitely be using them again.

Michael. T

Understanding of my fear of needles

The nurse was incredibly helpful and understanding of my fear of needles, providing constant reassurance and guiding me through the entire process to help take my mind off what was happening.

You’re in good hands

I visited the clinic for a private blood test and was immediately impressed by the service. They offer a wide range of services, everything feels high quality and professional, and Emma, who attended to us, was fantastic! Whatever service you book here, you can be confident you’re in very capable hands.

Robert

Top notch experience

As someone who regularly needs blood tests due to diabetes, I can honestly say this was the first time I experienced absolutely no pain at all with the needle—truly none! There was also no bruising afterward. It was a really top-notch job and made for an excellent overall experience (something I’ve never said about a blood test before!).

Ashley. P

Friendly and relaxing atmosphere

I found the staff to be friendly, approachable, and highly professional. They explained everything clearly as they carried out the blood draw. The clinic was clean and thoughtfully set up to help patients feel at ease.

Lorra. L

Polite and efficient approach

I was impressed by the company’s focus on clear communication and professionalism. The procedure was quick, well-organised, and ran smoothly with no unnecessary waiting or confusion. I especially appreciated their gentle approach and how they put me at ease, which was reassuring since it was my first blood draw at the clinic.

Simon. S

Amazing service including nurse coming

Outstanding service, including a nurse visiting my home for blood work. Full body scans through Well Man and Well Woman were arranged within three days, including additional scans and tests which i had requested. All organised within two days and delivered directly to my home. Truly convenient and efficient service!

Andrew. B

Made a dreaded blood test so much easier

I had been feeling unwell for three years and had numerous blood tests through my doctor with no clear answers. I decided to try Goodbody Clinic and ordered an at-home menopause test. The results revealed that I have a low thyroid TSH level, and I am so relieved that this issue was finally identified.

Charlie. T

Truly fantastic local service!

From start to finish, the service was exceptional. Booking the appointment was straightforward, and the entire experience was well-organized and impressively quick.

Dmitry. R

Results less than 24 hours later
