Advanced Well Man Blood Test

The Advanced Well Man checks 48 markers:

A Well Man test is a blood panel designed around the conditions most likely to affect men: heart disease, type 2 diabetes, prostate problems, low testosterone, liver strain and hidden deficiencies. Rather than testing one thing because of one symptom, it gives a baseline across all of them from a single sample, with a GP report that explains what each result means. The Advanced Well Man is our mid-range version; the Essential Well Man is a finger-prick kit with 17 markers, and the Signature Well Man extends to 67.

Not as a package. The NHS Health Check, offered every five years to adults aged 40 to 74 in England, measures blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and sometimes HbA1c, and does not include PSA, testosterone, liver or kidney function, iron, vitamins or a full blood count unless your GP has a specific reason to order them. A private Well Man test fills that gap, and your GP report can be taken to your own GP if anything needs following up on the NHS.

The Advanced Well Man is £175 at one of 250+ Goodbody clinics or £195 with a nurse home visit, including the blood draw, all 48 markers and a GP report. Well Man tests in the UK typically cost £100 to £250 depending on how many markers are included and whether the blood draw and doctor's review are extra. Ours are included.

Beyond blood pressure and cholesterol, the markers that change men's outcomes in their 40s and 50s are PSA as a prostate baseline, HbA1c for pre-diabetes, which is often silent for years, testosterone, which falls by around one percent a year from 30 and drives tiredness, low mood and muscle loss, liver enzymes, which pick up fatty liver long before symptoms, ferritin and vitamin D, and high-sensitivity CRP for background inflammation. All of them are in this test, and none is part of a standard NHS Health Check.

PSA is a protein made by the prostate. A raised level can mean an enlarged prostate, inflammation or prostate cancer, and it is the first test the NHS uses before a prostate MRI. From 45, or from 40 if you are Black or have a family history of prostate cancer, a baseline PSA is worth knowing. A normal result is reassuring but not a guarantee; a raised one is usually repeated and interpreted with your age and symptoms. Avoid vigorous exercise, cycling and ejaculation for 48 hours before the test. If your PSA is raised, your GP report explains the next steps, and our Prostate MRI is available without a referral.

Yes, total testosterone. Low testosterone is common from the 40s onward and shows up as tiredness, low libido, erectile problems, low mood, poor concentration and loss of muscle. Testosterone is highest in the morning, so book a morning appointment, which the fasting requirement makes natural anyway. If your result is low or borderline, the report will explain it and may suggest repeating it; our Testosterone Blood Test adds free testosterone and SHBG if you want the fuller picture.

Yes. We ask you to fast for 8 to 12 hours before your sample is taken, so book a morning appointment and have nothing but water from the evening before. Fasting keeps the triglyceride and glucose-related results comparable with the reference ranges. Take any regular medication as normal unless your GP has told you otherwise, and eat as soon as the sample is done.

Once a year is a sensible rhythm for most men over 40: it builds a baseline and shows trends in cholesterol, HbA1c, PSA and liver markers before they become problems. Under 40 and feeling well, every two to three years is reasonable unless you have a family history of heart disease, diabetes or prostate cancer, or are making changes to diet, training or supplements and want to measure the effect.

The Essential Well Man (£129) is a finger-prick kit you take at home, with 17 markers covering cholesterol, testosterone, thyroid, liver, kidney, iron, vitamin D, B12, folate and magnesium. The Advanced (£175) needs a venous draw at a clinic or by a nurse and adds PSA, HbA1c, a full blood count, inflammation, full iron studies and more liver and kidney markers, 48 in all. If you want the prostate and diabetes markers, or you are over 40, choose the Advanced. If convenience matters most and you are under 40, the Essential is a good start.

Results are emailed within 3 to 5 working days of your sample reaching the laboratory. You receive every result with its reference range, plus a GP report that explains each section, flags anything out of range and says what to do next, including when to take a result to your own GP.
