The winter checklist

Six things winter puts under strain

Each one has a test that answers it, and all six sit inside a single appointment. Start wherever it sounds most like you.

Heart & cholesterol

Richer food, less daylight and far fewer walks. Cholesterol drifts up over winter in most people, and it is the one thing you will feel absolutely nothing about until it matters.

What gets measuredTotal cholesterol, HDL, LDL, non-HDL, the cholesterol-to-HDL ratio and triglycerides.

Liver

Between the parties, the long lunches and the fortnight at home, December is the heaviest drinking month of the year for most households. Liver markers move quickly — and recover quickly, if you know to act.

What gets measuredALT, AST, ALP, gamma GT, albumin, globulin, total protein and bilirubin.

Thyroid & energy

Always cold, always tired, putting on weight without changing much. Everyone blames the season. An underactive thyroid looks exactly the same from the outside — and it is common, and it is treatable.

What gets measuredTSH, free T4 and free T3 — plus thyroid antibodies on the fuller panel.

Mood, memory & focus

From October to March the UK sun is too weak to make vitamin D in your skin at all, so your stores only go one way. Low vitamin D, B12 or folate all show up as flat mood, foggy thinking and no concentration.

What gets measuredVitamin D (25-OH), vitamin B12 and folate.

Iron & tiredness

Low iron is the single most common treatable cause of being tired all the time, and it is far more common in women with heavy periods. Feeling cold and exhausted together points here first.

What gets measuredFerritin, serum iron, transferrin and total iron binding capacity.

Hormones

Low drive, short fuse, broken sleep, nothing in the tank at the gym. Easy to write off as a hard quarter. Hormones are measurable, and knowing the number is the difference between guessing and deciding.

What gets measuredTestosterone, free testosterone and SHBG for men; oestradiol, progesterone, FSH, LH and prolactin for women.

Prices shown are our standard per-person rates, pulled live from our catalogue. Collection method affects the price — the exact figure for in clinic, nurse home visit or home kit is shown on each test page.

Question 1 of 3
Why winter

Three things that are only true between now and March

Winter is not a marketing season for blood tests. It is the stretch of the year when the most measurable things change at once.

The sun stops working

From October to March the UK sun sits too low to make any vitamin D in your skin. Whatever you banked over summer is all you have, and it drains for six straight months. A reading now tells you what you are running on.

The load lands all at once

Six weeks of richer food, more drinking, less movement and a full diary. Cholesterol, liver markers and blood sugar all register it. Test in the middle of it and you get the honest number, not the New Year one.

January is the worst time to start

Everyone books in January, and every waiting list reflects it. Test now and your results land while you can still do something with them — and you go into the new year with a number rather than a resolution.

Before you book

The questions people actually ask

Do I need a GP referral?
No. You book directly, attend your appointment and your results come back to you with a GP report. If anything is outside the reference range, that report tells you what it means and when to take it to your own GP.
How quickly will I get my results?
Most tests on this page come back within 3 to 5 working days of your sample reaching the laboratory. The widest panels — Premium Complete and the Signature tests — take 5 to 7 working days, because the thyroid antibody and trace metal analyses take longer.
Do I have to go to a clinic?
Not necessarily. There are 250+ clinics across the UK, or a nurse can come to your home or workplace for around £20 more. A few of the smaller panels are also available as a finger-prick kit you do at home — the options and prices for each are on the individual test page.
Do I need to fast?
For the Premium Complete and the Signature tests, yes — 8 to 12 hours, water only, so book a morning slot. Most of the single-system tests on this page do not require fasting. Each test page says which applies.
Can I use the code on more than one test?
Yes. The code applies to every test on this page, however many you put in your basket. It cannot be combined with any other discount code.
I already feel unwell. Should I test or see my GP?
See your GP. These tests are for people who want to understand their health, not a replacement for medical assessment. If you have unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fever, persistent pain, breathlessness at rest or chest pain, please see a doctor rather than waiting for a test result.
What if everything comes back normal?
That is a useful result in itself: it rules out the common, treatable causes and tells you to look elsewhere — usually sleep, stress or lifestyle load. Your GP report says what a normal set of results does and does not rule out, and what to check next if symptoms continue.
