How do you get a full allergy test?
Order this test online, no GP referral needed. Choose a finger-prick kit posted to your home, a blood draw at one of 250+ Goodbody clinics, or a nurse home visit. One sample is tested against 295 allergens at once, so you do not need to guess which category to test for or come back for further panels. The report is emailed within 14 working days. On the NHS, allergy testing is available only through referral to an allergy clinic, usually after a GP has assessed you, and typically tests a handful of suspected allergens chosen from your history.
How much does an allergy blood test cost?
From £329 for the Complete Allergy Blood Test with a home finger-prick kit, £359 with the sample taken at a Goodbody clinic, or £379 with a nurse home visit, covering 295 allergens and total IgE. What is the difference between an allergy and an intolerance?
An allergy is an immune reaction: your body makes IgE antibodies against a protein, and exposure triggers symptoms within minutes to two hours, itching, hives, swelling, sneezing, wheeze, vomiting or, at worst, anaphylaxis. An intolerance does not involve IgE; symptoms such as bloating, wind, headaches or tiredness come on slowly, are rarely dangerous, and are usually about digestion, for example lactose intolerance. Is a blood test as good as a skin prick test for allergies?
For most purposes, yes, and it has advantages. Skin prick testing and specific IgE blood testing detect the same antibody and agree in the great majority of cases. A blood test is not affected by antihistamines, eczema or dermatographism, carries no risk of a reaction during the test, and can screen hundreds of allergens from one sample, which skin testing cannot. Skin prick tests give a result within twenty minutes and are slightly more sensitive for some inhaled allergens. Allergy clinics use both, and a positive blood result is exactly the kind of evidence that speeds up a referral.
What allergens does this test cover?
295 allergens across every major group. Inhaled: twenty tree pollens including birch, hazel, alder, ash, olive and plane; grasses including timothy, rye and Bermuda; weeds including mugwort, ragweed, nettle and ribwort; house dust and storage mites; cat, dog, horse, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, cattle, sheep, goat and pig dander; cockroach; moulds including Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Penicillium. Insect: honey bee and four wasp venoms, fire ant. Foods: wheat, rye, barley, oats, rice, buckwheat and other cereals, cow, goat, sheep, camel and mare's milk, egg white and yolk, 25 fruits and vegetables, peanut, tree nuts, soy, lentils, peas and chickpeas, beef, chicken, pork, lamb and turkey, and 20 fish and shellfish. Plus latex and total IgE.
What do the results look like, and what do the classes mean?
A PDF report listing every allergen with your specific IgE level and a graded, colour-coded reaction class from no reaction to high. No reaction means no antibody was detected; a low class often occurs without symptoms; medium and high classes show sensitisation, and the higher the class the more likely a true allergy. Total IgE gives an overall picture of allergic tendency. A positive result means you are sensitised; whether that causes symptoms depends on you, which is why the report should be read alongside what you actually react to, and why an allergy clinic confirms before advising strict avoidance.
Do I need to stop antihistamines or prepare?
No. Antihistamines, steroid inhalers and nasal sprays do not affect a blood test, unlike skin prick testing, where they must be stopped for several days. No fasting is needed. Take the sample at any time of day. The one preparation is to order in good time if your symptoms are seasonal: IgE persists year-round, so you do not need to test during hay fever season, but results in 14 working days mean testing in spring gives you answers before summer.
What should I do if my allergy test is positive?
Take the report to your GP. For an inhaled allergen, the result guides avoidance and treatment, and can support a referral for immunotherapy if antihistamines and nasal sprays are not enough. For a food, a positive result in someone who has reacted to that food confirms the allergy and your GP can refer you to an allergy clinic for a management plan, and an adrenaline pen if the reaction was severe. For a food you eat regularly without any symptoms, a low positive usually means sensitisation without allergy, and it should not be cut out on the blood result alone. For venom, a positive result with a history of a serious sting reaction needs specialist referral.
Can this test tell me if I am at risk of anaphylaxis?
It can identify what you are sensitised to, including the allergens most often behind severe reactions, peanut, tree nuts, shellfish, milk, egg, wheat, soy, sesame and insect venoms, and a high class raises the likelihood of a significant reaction. It cannot predict how severe your next reaction will be; that depends on the dose, your asthma control and other factors an allergy clinic assesses. If you have ever had swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing or collapse after eating or a sting, see your GP for urgent referral regardless of any test result.
What are the symptoms of an allergy?
Sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy or watery eyes and wheeze from inhaled allergens, often seasonal or worse indoors. Hives, itching, swelling of the lips, face or eyes, tingling in the mouth, vomiting, cramps or diarrhoea within two hours of eating from food allergens. Localised swelling that spreads, or dizziness and breathlessness, after a sting. Flares of eczema in children with food or dust mite allergy. Symptoms that appear hours later or build over days are more likely to be intolerance.
How does the finger-prick kit work for an allergy test?
The kit is posted to you with lancets, a collection tube, plasters, instructions and a prepaid return envelope. Wash your hands in warm water, prick a fingertip, fill the tube to the line and post it back the same day. The laboratory reports all 295 allergens and total IgE from the sample.
