Understanding the Vitamins Blood Test

Our Vitamins blood test checks your body’s levels of key vitamins and minerals essential for optimal health, including Vitamin D, B12 and Folate (B9).

What is a Vitamins Blood Test?

A Vitamins Blood Test is a medical procedure that evaluates the levels of various vitamins in your bloodstream. This test is crucial for identifying any nutritional deficiencies, as many individuals do not consume adequate vitamins through their diet. For example, a Vitamin D deficiency might lead to bone problems, while a lack of Vitamin B12 can cause fatigue and nerve issues. The test helps doctors determine the right treatment or dietary adjustments required to improve your health.

Why is it Important?

Monitoring vitamin levels is essential for maintaining overall health and wellness. Vitamins play a vital role in processes such as immune function, energy production, and cognitive abilities. However, many people may neglect their nutritional intake because of busy lifestyles or lack of knowledge about the importance of vitamins. The Vitamins Blood Test provides insight, so you can identify deficiencies and take necessary steps to correct them.

Who Should Get Tested?

While anyone can benefit from a Vitamins Blood Test, certain individuals are at a higher risk of deficiency. This includes vegetarians, pregnant women, and the elderly, who might not absorb nutrients as effectively. If you experience symptoms like fatigue, hair loss, or muscle weakness, it's wise to consider testing. A simple blood test can help ensure you're not missing out on vital nutrients needed for a healthy life.

More Information

This test is ideal for anybody wishing to identify their vitamin levels, particularly if you feel you may be deficient due to lifestyle or diet.
For example, vegetarians and vegans are at higher risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Everyone in the UK is at risk of vitamin D deficiency due to the climate, however people of African or African-Caribbean origin may be at higher risk because your bodies may not be able to make as much vitamin D.

You must be over 18 years old to use this test.

Vitamin D deficiency

Low levels of vitamin D affect your bones and muscles, as well as playing a significant role in your nervous system and immune system. Vitamin D maintains the balance of calcium in your blood and bones to help maintain and build bones.

With a chronic or severe deficiency, calcium absorption levels will decline and can cause muscle weakness, cramps, fatigue and depression. When your body tries to balance the calcium levels, it takes calcium from your bones which leads to accelerated bone breakdown, sometimes leading to soft bones (osteomalacia), osteoporosis and rickets.

Vitamin B12 deficiency

Vitamin B12 is used to form red blood cells, as well as help brain function and nerve cell development. A vitamin B12 deficiency leads to a lack of red blood cells, causing anaemia. In turn, this means you have fewer functioning blood cells carrying oxygen to your tissues and organs, affecting their function and health.

Typical symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency include weak muscles, numb or tingling hands or feet, decreased appetite, nausea, irritability, fatigue and heart palpitations.

Vitamin B9 deficiency

Also known as Folate, Vitamin B9 is found naturally in many foods including leafy greens, citrus fruits, beans, eggs, meat and grains. Like vitamin B12, it is used by the body to create new, healthy blood cells, and a deficiency can lead to Folate Anaemia.

A deficiency is commonly caused by not eating a balanced, healthy diet. It can also be caused by digestive diseases which prevent folate absorption, such as Crohn’s or Coeliac disease, excess alcohol consumption, overcooking food which destroys the natural folate, or certain medications which impact absorption such as for ulcerative colitis.

Folate deficiency or anaemia can cause symptoms such as pale skin, irritability, shortness of breath, dizziness, mouth sores, memory loss, lack of energy, weight loss, depression and muscle weakness.

Got the PSA results next day

I completed the PSA test with the PSE EpiSwitch Prostate Cancer test in Soho yesterday and posted my samples at Soho Square at 10:30 am. I received my PSA results the very next day—outstanding service! Despite a BRCA genetic mutation, I am happy to report that I am cancer-free. Thank you, EpiSwitch. 5 stars!

Someone from Goodbody called me to put my mind ease

I recently had a full blood count taken by a very friendly nurse at Superdrug. She completed all my paperwork for me and was incredibly kind. I received my results the next day. Because of my anxiety and having never seen a lab report before, I emailed for some clarification, and to my surprise, someone from Goodbody called me to put my mind at ease. I’m very grateful for the excellent service and will definitely be using them again.

Top notch experience

As someone who regularly needs blood tests due to diabetes, I can honestly say this was the first time I experienced absolutely no pain at all with the needle—truly none! There was also no bruising afterward. It was a really top-notch job and made for an excellent overall experience (something I’ve never said about a blood test before!).

Made a dreaded blood test so much easier

I had been feeling unwell for three years and had numerous blood tests through my doctor with no clear answers. I decided to try Goodbody Clinic and ordered an at-home menopause test. The results revealed that I have a low thyroid TSH level, and I am so relieved that this issue was finally identified.
